Has anyone worked with the Orisha deities? I'm sort of interested in Them and wondering what some of you had to say. Any comments would be great.

I understand that there is a way to find out which Orisha is prominet in your life. How is this done?

Not me personally. But just some Santeria practitioners I have met over the years. They are pretty much like any other pagan Gods(ess). If you want to get into communicating with them get into "Ifa". Its a form of divination involving sea shells. Some of it can be quite elaborate though.

Like any other Divinities, we don't find them. They find us! I'll bet the name of one particular Loa (Orisha) is circling around in your mind, huh? Do some research. There are plenty of books out there.

Also, find a Botanica! Most people pass these little shops by and never guess that these places are great supply shops for all types of Will-worker. Most of them look like Catholic supply stores. Books, candles, herbs, oils, charms and all manner of ritual tools can be found in these shops. If you live in a city of 75,000 or more people, there's a Botanica somewhere... Probably more than one!

Be careful though. Many Vodoun practitioners have an incredible distaste for anyone who is not of Afro-Caribe descent! They seem to especially dislike Wiccans... It could have started with Alex Saunders and his not so friendly run-ins with practitioners of what may have been Obeah (Dahomey derived Tradition known for necromancy and harmful practices). The accounts aren't too clear.

On the other hand, most Vodoun folk are quite nice and will help you on your quest. Like I said, we don't find the Gods, They find us...

There actually is a Santeria store near me, though I've never been inside. I think it's actually a famous one because it's been on tv and stuff. I don't know if I want to go into a deep investigation on all the Orisha. However, I do wish to know which Orisha is prominet in my life. My aunt did it a few years ago, but I don't want to pay like $40 if I could do it myself.

Have you tried talking with them? Always a good place to start. They're very close to this layer of existence.

I've worked with Papa Legba, having something resembling a Trickster Bait complex, and with Erzuli Dantor, once. Frightening consciousness, there. Personally would like to learn more from someone born into it, the structure of the whole thing being very close to how I see things, but I'm also kind of afraid to ask around, being whiter than white and brought up in a very different culture. ^_^;

I would suggest one should read up on the religion at first before approching them. Just so when you go to speak to them you have a sense in what they are talking about and lets them know you are serious. I tend to find alot of botanical shop owners tend to be on the suspicious side in particular of strangers so thats my reason for the recomendation. You tend to have to show up to teh shop a few times before they begin to trust you. (This doesnt aplly to all botanical shop owners though BTW.)
