I have been thinking about this one recently. What do you think of this saying and it's meaning?

All beings, essentially, are Buddhas.
However we carry this preconceived notion of a what a Buddha should be, possibly shooting down others who don't live up to this fantasy expectation, even though they still may have something to teach us.
Killing the Buddha means wiping out the fantasy and close-minded expectations. The road I feel means both our path of life, but also in conjunction with the mental road, where we set up these ideals.
So, basically every day we are going to have to kill the Buddha, humbling ourselves and our preconceived notions, to learn from the variety of beings we cross paths with.
This is, at least, what I gather. I may be totally wrong. *shrug*

If you see the Buddha, you are no longer the Buddha.
Kill Buddha, and make your self complete...
In other words, destroy the distinction that you and the Buddha are not one and the same.

What
Rend Sever wrote.
Also, consider what Bassui wrote in a letter to the Zen Priest Iguchi:
An ancient Zen Master [Rinzai] said: "You should not cling to the idea that you are Pure-essence." And again: "Your physical body, composed of the four basic elements, can't hear or understand this preaching. The empty-space can't understand this preaching. Then what is it that hears and understands?" Meditate fully and directly on these words. Take hold of this koan as though wielding the jewel-sword of the Vajra King. Cut down whatever appears in the mind. When the thoughts of mundane matters arise, cute them off. When notions of Buddhism arise, likewise lop them off. In short, destroy all ideas, whether of realization, of Buddhas or of devils, and all day long pursue the question "What is it that hears this preaching?"
When you have eradicated every conception until only emptiness remains, and then cut through even the emptiness, your mind will burst open and that which hears will manifest itself. Persevere, persevere - never quite halfway - until you reach the point where you feel as though you have risen from the dead. Only then will you be able to wholly resolve the momentous question, "What is it that hears this preaching?"

What Rend said.
Everything is Buddha. So if you suddenly see something that is Buddha, that implies that you were seeing things which you considered not to be Buddha. "Killing Buddha" just means you are eliminating the idea that other things were not Buddha.

Part of it overlooked... merely becoming 'yourself'... then everything and anything can be made...
Although all this is not really good for worded expression... better experienced and understood innately...

I know this is a serious topic but couldnt help wondering what would happen if a murderer scited that.
"I thought he was the buddha, so killed him. Then this other guy comes up to me, also seeming like buddha... man this buddha guy is slippery!"
lol

It means Buddha is nothing more special than anything else. Be attached to buddha, and you are still stuck with attachment.

Killing ones own mentalities is essential to forward movement, anything anyone else has to say is of no consequence, for they may be farther forward, farther behind (or somewhere in-between), or on a completely different path or blazing a trail of their own. I'd say, it means be concerned only about yourself, damn the consequences.

Rather entertaining twist on this is from Book 4, where crowley advises to shoot the dog that disturbs your meditation (thereby emphasizing the "technical", as opposed to ethical aspect of eastern thinking) ;-)

Attachment, even to the notion of Buddhahood, even to the notion of being enlightened, even to the notion of enlightened vs. non-enlightened, are hindrances which must be destroyed. Even our idols must be torn down as we go beyond images & multiplicty into Primal Unity-Simplicity.

I always took the Buddha on the road to be a representation of obsession; a sign that one has become so enamored with the destination that the journey loses its purpose and no growth is achieved. Killing the Buddha is killing desire and re-achieving no-mind.
....or not. Who knows?

This is the entire paragraph that the sentence is taken from.
Followers of the Way [of Chán], if you want to get the kind of understanding that accords with the Dharma, never be misled by others. Whether you're facing inward or facing outward, whatever you meet up with, just kill it! If you meet a buddha, kill the buddha. If you meet a patriarch, kill the patriarch. If you meet an arhat, kill the arhat. If you meet your parents, kill your parents. If you meet your kinfolk, kill your kinfolk. Then for the first time you will gain emancipation, will not be entangled with things, will pass freely anywhere you wish to go.
