A Gnostic Question: Who is the true God?
Original post: L.A.Storm
Greetings All,
Some years ago I read a couple of books on Gnosticism. From those books I have the idea that Gnostic's Believe that the Creator of the Universe is a False God(the "Demiurge"); and that the "Hidden God" is the True God.
Assuming that my basic understanding is correct; It occurs to me that if I had to choose an allegiance; It would make more sense to worship the demiurge whose creation I am part of. I am making that assumption based on the idea that as part of the creation, I wouldn't exist outside of it.
I am curious to know how others would perceive this question.
I would also like to know if anyone agrees/disagrees with my conjecture that our existence is reliant upon the Creation?
Or would you believe that our souls are actually part of the "True" or "Hidden" God?

Well in my world you got it all wrong, but that doesn't mean you are!
When reading any text the subtext is always very important as is allegories (which the Bible especially is crammed with - as is Gnostic texts).
I am not sure what you are coming from but I don't put any weight on Creation... the Demiurge is more like the Machine/the System... and we are all a part of it. This false reality that exist all around us.
The film THE MATRIX explains Gnostic concepts in simple terms I think and if you eat the apple you wake up and realize you are nothing but a battery.
There is more to all this, but I'm done for now... I am sure others will add to this with better or worse info!

A Gnostic Question: Who is the true God?
Original post: L.A.Storm
I will attempt to express my ideas a little more clearly.
I define the "Creation" as the entirety of existence; including any and all spiritual dimensions that may exist. That would include the places where my Soul or other energy "Bodies" would dwell.
According to my definition, The "Hidden God" would exist completely outside this framework of creation.
As for as my Gnostic conceptions go, I am not particularly well read in such areas.
I have been known to add two plus two and get five as a result.
If there is anyone more familiar with Gnostic beliefs who can correct any misunderstanding of the core concepts that I have; I welcome the correction.
I do NOT believe that ignorance is bliss.
Although; I have been known to grow quite excited at the opportunity to learn something new.
To respond to MATRIX reference; I just had a really weird idea. What if Souls weren't really "ours"?
What if Souls were really eternally existing spiritual entities who attached themselves to us when we are born and feed off our experiences; but then abandon us when we die?
That would mean that we aren't immortal and that our one brief existence is all we get; while the "Soul entities" go on to their eternal existence.
HaHa, That would suck!

Gnosticism isn't something that fits well in short-hand, but I get long-winded. Keeping in mind that there are practically as many Gnostic sects as there are major varieties of Christianity I'll give you what I consider the basic facts of general gnosticism:
* At the beginning of everything, there was a being which is beyond our understanding and description. Because of the nature of this being, further "bits" emanated, fell off, occurred, mostly by natural progression not necessarily due to intentional creation.
* The basest of these direct emanations (Sophia), in its own imperfection, gave birth to a being which more or less gave birth to the physical world we are a part of, and by proxy, the physical chunks that we operate here. (In some instances, the Demiurge's creator gave birth to this world and he just took credit).
* Now, the big catch that is central to Gnosticism is that EVERYTHING contains a bit of the essence of the original being, often called the Ain Soph or Ain Soph Aur (The Unkowable Light) by those coming from a Kabbalistic background and the Monad in general. This not only includes the original emanations and the Demiurge, but us as well.
* Through our own gnosis (awareness of this) and further realization and union with the Ain Soph, we can eventually let ourselves become free of this world in a sense very similar to the concept of moksha in Hinduism, in which that Divine Spark within us is reunited with the Ain Soph, and thus, the central portion of our being that animates and gives us consciousness does.
What you are thinking is that the Demiurge is the Creator of ALL of reality, but the most-widely traditionally accepted concept is that he created physicality and that the Pleroma (the entirety of Divinity, including all emanations except for Sophia who was separated when she gave birth to the Demiurge) is the realm of the Ain Soph. Technically, the astral etc. escapes easy definition in Gnostic terms because it was not a concept they utilized traditionally.

Death... bring it on!

You know, I read into most of these gnostic beliefs, and I'll be honest... I'm seeing The Demiurge and The Ain Soph as one and the same.
And of course you have some people refering that the demiurge is another name for Satan(which it probably is)... and if that's true, then who's the creator of the physical universe?

Thank you for your input, Aodh.
You are correct, I definitively envisioned the Demiurge as Ain Soph Aur; and Posited the Hidden God as separate.
You have given me some new Ideas to think upon. I shall have to Brush up on my Gnosticism.
I think part of the problem that I have understanding Gnostic thought is that I do not see matter as Evil or wrong.
I like Existing. I love Birds and Bees and Frogs and Trees and even the occasional Human.
I am not really in any hurray to rejoin the Godhead. The Universe is filled with far too many interesting things.
I am glad you were able to appreciate my fine sense of humor, Deviadah.
One tries ones humble best.

I personally have a lot more Hindu flavoring ala the left-hand path, so my own involvement in this world is a lot less monastic than many Gnostic sects. I kind of apply the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi to my spiritual beliefs, hah.

A Gnostic Question: Who is the true God?
Original post: High Priest Enki
there is far more to this than you would think, many factors to take into consideration, but all in all it can be said there is no real god, just advanced beings pulling the strings or guiding us, an astral plane and duality between physical and spiritual which is the glue holding all life together, there is no right path to follow, no right god to worship, what counts is the moral choices you make and the way you walk your path.
for more information please feel free to checkout my site, i would rather not type a long essay lol.

Greetings High Priest Spanky,
I want to thank you personally for taking the time out of your busy schedule to come here and SPAM this thread.
Just when I was beginning to think nobody was reading. I feel much better about life now.
I took the liberty of following your link.
I noticed two apparently contradictory statements on the first page.
In one place you guy's claim that you do not attempt to convert or proselytize, and in another place on the same page you actively encourage people to go out and SPAM other sites. Like this one.
I want to thank you again for an idea you have given me. I am tired of working for a living; so I am going to create the next new ultimate true religion of the week.
As a courtesy, for your kindness in showing me my true path, I will make it a point to stop by your site and allow you and friends the divine honor of helping me spread the next great religion.(and make a few bucks in the process) God really needs money you know, after all, he doesn't have a printing press.
Well, it's been great chatting with you...don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out...No, seriously, it's a good solid door and you might get bruised.
You see, I'm not sure my homeowners insurance would cover such an injury, and since I haven't actually created the Next true great religion yet, I am pretty much still relying on my paycheck.
:agree:

well i would like to thank you for taking the time for sarcastic and insulting remarks, we encourage people to tell friends they think may be interested in the site for the building of a community, the site offers resources not conversion, please do try and read more before jumping to conclusions in such an aggressive manner.
i did not insult you nor did i insult your faith and neither am i going to lower myself to your level, there are too many angry and arrogant people out there, no i am not going to call you ignorant, your opinion is your right due to free will but please, try to use a more civil tongue.
as quoted Directly from the site:
"If you want to make a difference, if you want to help, post on our forums, spread the website, tell your friends, don't be afraid use it in conversation, don't make fliers without permission. We do not have to hide anymore, it is time to take a stand, we will be heard."
in lamens terms post on the forums on that website, not spam others, i added my link as a helpful way if you wished to continue reading to save time from typing an essay, if you wish i could spend a lot of time making you a long long long essay to read if you would prefer
we warn people not to make fliers without permission due to the fact some of our members have tried to make fliers at their own choice and got in trouble, if someone wants to do that it is their choice, again free will, but along with the rest of the site we offer disclaimers, we do not control our members.
the we will be heard statement is due to people being afraid to speak of their faith due to suppression of other faiths and aggressive people like yourself.
now i would like to ask you to get your facts straight before ranting on, but i would like you for proving a point at the troubles people face as the result of closed minded individuals.
Now I can see why you may have gotten confused. so for the benefit of people such as yourself who may take things the wrong way i have changed that section to the following:
"If you want to help us out, there are some things you can do, the first way is to become active on our forums, a strong community can be a big help, please remember though that we do not accept the pushing of anyone's faith on anyone else, not even our own, but, if you know people who may be interested, offer them the link, talk to your friends about it and try not to be afraid of using it in conversations, your faith is your right and you do not need to be afraid to voice your opinions, but remember they are opinions and everyone has a right to their own, we do not recommend sending out fliers but if you wish to please get the right kind of permission or you can get in legal trouble. Remember, we do not have to hide anymore."
perhapse in future you could speak to people with a little more respect, especially when it is you who jumped to conclusions, as with the rest of your insults they lie in a similar area, try to read before you judge, i just hope one day you can learn to use your head.
have a nice day.

At the end of the day your post was and still is irrelevant though (much like my second post in this thread but in a more direct manner) given that this thread was asking a very specific question about GNOSTIC belief systems, not some variety of Mesopotamian reconstructed or constructed faith.High Priest Enki;316442 wrote:well i would like to thank you for taking the time for sarcastic and insulting remarks, we encourage people to tell friends they think may be interested in the site for the building of a community, the site offers resources not conversion, please do try and read more before jumping to conclusions in such an aggressive manner.

actually it was asking a direct question on who is the true god, even as a gnostic view this allows for philosophical theories from any side, meaning there was in fact room for my point, if it was not meant for that perhaps it should have been labelled a little better.

you are a complete ass you know that, for 1 i have posted my site in the designated sections 2, you obviously haven't read anything and you are harrassing me personally, i am here to talk, try reading other posts, have i guided people to my site no, i have sent an email to a mod asking if i have in fact broken any rules and even edited previous posts so that i would make sure that is not the case.
now on to you mate
you jump to conclusions without even reading or understanding anything fully, your version of spam is legitimately placed posts in their accurate sections?
you are nothing more than an immature child lashing out at someone who does not follow your own beliefs, that is disgusting, you are breaking the rules yourself *cough*harassment, putting down others beliefs, false accusations*cough*
i tried to be civil with you but now all i can say is i hope you enjoyed yourself, was it really worth it?, good day jerk off i am reporting you for those specific rule breaks.
you accused me of deeds i have not done, you have insulted me for no reason, you have insulted my faith and you are a closed minded bigot.
i am not writing this to *poke the bear* merly to defend myself against self absorbed ignorant people, i am reporting you yes, but for a fair reason, if you think I am doign wrong thats your own problem mate i have not broken any rules and have i even tried to contact mods to make sure of this fact, people like you sicken me, every fibre of my being.
I hope you are happy with yourself, you have pushed me into an unsavoury reply, ihave sent a report on your actions, you should be ashaimed of yourself, for someone who claims to be defending the rules you are doing a very good job at breaking them in a very disgusting manner.
you are a complete ass you know that, for 1 i have posted my site in the designated sections 2, you obviously haven't read anything and you are harrassing me personally, i am here to talk, try reading other posts, have i guided people to my site no, i have sent an email to a mod asking if i have in fact broken any rules and even edited previous posts so that i would make sure that is not the case.
now on to you mate

A Gnostic Question: Who is the true God?
Original post: deviadah
Let me quote myself at this point:
[QUOTE=deviadah;315131]My advice:
1. Everytime you see a pointless thread i.e. What is your favourite food = stay away
2. Everytime you see a pointless post i.e. I am a Satanist, so fuck you = ignore it (or click report)
3. Everytime you yourself post put your heart in it!

A Gnostic Question: Who is the true God?

Wow the first page was all polite backwards and forwards Q&A. The second page of this thread is fucked up and degenerating into a flame war.
In these cases people start getting warnings and the thread gets locked and everyone gets grumpy etc, so just keep it cool.
I will say, whether or not High Priest's site is not to your liking, they havent posted it verbatim on this thread so consider it adjunct to this discussion and not part of it, maybe the ideas though.
No issue with calling bullshit on their views, as long as you don't use the word bullshit or are rude to them, which LA and AODH have been.
Enki, calling people 'a complete ass' is flaming, anyway, you all know this, so stop fighting and return to topic.

A Gnostic Question: Who is the true God?
Original post: High Priest Enki
I do apologise for my unsavory reply, and i do admit i can get a little "in your face" with things it is a downfall I have but i only get that way when people make assumptions and insults towards me for no reason.
However you are right and i do retract my insults, but my posituion stands as in the post, my first reply to him was respectful and explaining, i do not appreciate being attacked in such a manner, as I am sure you understand
anywho back on track...
Even if you could say who the one true god is I am sure it would not matter, god would not want or need people to bow to him/her, what matters are your actions, your intentions and alike, the "one true god" would have an understanding that it is human nature to want to work at being better, and part of that is to find the right faith and work at it, arguments start over religions but in every case the aim is the same, actions and intentions and god would realise this and you would be treated by what you did not who you chose to align yourself with.

It happens. Thanks for getting back on track. Not to sounds nostalgic, but the Gnostic forum was one of the more...convivial forums, so thanks again for returning to point.
