Swan magic?

The Discovery Channel website has some information about a recent find in Cornwall, in an area that's always been famous for the raising of swans. Archeologists have found a number of pits that were dug in the 17th century, lined with swan skin, swan feathers, and an unidentified black organic material. In the centre of the pits were quartz crystals and the remains of various birds. In one case, two whole chickens were buried with the quartz crystals.

The archeologists who found the site believe that it could be evidence of a secret Pagan cult that worshipped the Goddess Dana. Other experts have dismissed the idea, and claimed that the pits are simply the remains of swan husbandry. They thought that the burial of different types of birds together with crystals in pits lined with swan skin and swan feathers was just an attempt to encourage the swans to lay eggs. So, if any of you raise chickens, you could try this technique.

All in all, a strange but interesting find, in my opinion.

---I didn't see that show either, but sympathetic magick has been worked all over the world since people saw a connection between themselves and other creatures/seasons so on...

---Cornwal is famouse for Swans, myths of changing swan fairies, swan omens, and an off beat version of the Children of Lir also comes from the cornwall region...
Heres a link to the Children of Lir Story if your interested...
http://mockingbird.creighton.edu/english/micsun/IrishResources/childlir.htm

---I don't know about the swan skins in cornwall, but in some parts the Swan bag, which is basicly a swan skin or a few of them , thats been cured/tanned, then sewn together is looked upon as being a very powerfull shamanic/magickal item... On the same lines as a crane-bag...

---As for the idea that the practice of placing skins and crystals , was a means of encouraging swans to nest, it very likely might be...
More probably the thought was to get a pair together/married, to nest and raise their young... A symbol of hoped for prosperity and abundance for the family/group...
Could also be a symbolic type binding of a married cupoule, in folk magick the burrying of cupouled creatures or symbols there of are often burried together with a stone/bottle containing a contract so on...

---BUT, if the hens arn't sitting real great, you can put Q-balls in their nests to get them setting and laying better... As without an egg, some good layers wont do their job like they should... Leave a Q-ball in their nest and remove the eggs, their happy to keep that ball warm and lay more eggs...
Crystal or Q-ball??? Hmmmmmmm? hehehee!

Making a nest of swan feathers and putting egg sized round crystals in them might be a way of encouraging swans to lay eggs. Burying a pair of chickens or parts from several birds with smalll crystal pebbles in a pit that's lined with swan feathers and swan skin and covering it all over to make the pit invisible sounds more like some kind of bird magic to me. But then, I've never raised swans.
