Ahhhhhh ...........Mermaids! How beatiful they are! But do they really exist? I personally think that mermaids are the souls of the people who drowned in the ocean. What's your opinion?

I have read a description of mermaids as being people posessed by undines. The fishy tail and all that would, in this case, only be 'visible' to astral sight. I think it was Alex Sanders who said that, and Stewart Farrar who recorded it, but I'm not sure now.

Hi,

Rarely is there smoke without fire. Mermaids are classical creatures of mythology, and as such they are a global phenomenon. Does this mean that they are real?

The shear historical evidence for supernatural beings is staggering. Ancient cultures based their entire existence on belief in these creatures, from mighty Gods to lowly Nymphs.

Maybe itâ??s our concept of such beings which have changed, not the beings themselves. Itâ??s somewhat clear that whatever looses its importance, slowly slide out of our reality, like stains on the wallpaper you only see when you actually pay attention to them.

Perception is not a matter of will, but of neurological possibility. The everyday interaction with supernatural beings disappeared as our social development demanded a more strict consensus on reality. The size of society dictates the individualâ??s ability to set aside this social consensus.

Among modern tribal societies, where the world is still animistic, all these creatures still meet and greet humans every day. They would have no problems understanding the idea of a mermaid, even if they had never seen the sea. Perhaps they would even see a mermaid, if someone brought them to the ocean.

One thing is certain though; they are no longer part of our consensus reality. Although now and again, they still appear to the lonely sailor.

All the best

I think the narwhale (Spelling?) or manitee is traditionally recognised as the creature the mermaid myth is based upon.

The mermaids took the sailors to their homes on the ocean floor and the sailors drowned. Scientists would have us believe that these creatures did not exist; that it was merely sex starved sailors having visions. They say that what the sailors REALLY saw was a sea cow (manitee) I will leave it up to you to decide for yourself which story you wish to believe.

Mermaid
Related: Folklore

in folklore, sea-dwelling creature commonly represented as having the head and body of a woman and a fishtail instead of legs. Belief in mermaids, and in their counterpart, mermen, has existed since earliest times. They are often described as having great beauty and charm, which they use to lure sailors to their deaths (see Siren ). In some legends they assumed human shape and married mortals (see Mélusine ). The origin of the mermaid is thought by some to be the dugong (see sirenian).

And under Sirenian

(sīrē´nēen) or sea cow, name for a large aquatic mammal of the order Sirenia. Living sirenians are the dugong and the manatee, both found in warm, shallow waters in sheltered regions, where they feed on seaweeds and sea grasses. Sirenians are the only marine mammals, outside of the whale order, that spend their entire lives in the water, and they are the only marine mammals that feed exclusively on vegetation. Their heavy, thickset bodies are fishlike in form, the tail ending in a horizontally flattened fin. There are no hind legs, and the forelegs are modified into weak flippers. The gray skin is completely hairless, except for the bristles around the fleshy lips; the upper lip is cleft into two lobes, used for gathering food. The female has a pair of mammary glands on the chest, and holds the pup in her flippers while nursing. It has been speculated that the manatees, which nurse on the water's surface, are the source of mermaid legends.

Source http://www.encyclopedia.com

The fact that the female of this species has mammory glands on the chest is interesting. I suppose a desperately mind-warped sailor could believe he is seeing a woman and throw himself overboard into her arms. Could easily fit with the description of sailors being lured to their deaths by a seductive mermaid. Thank G-d they allow women on boats these days

Merry Meet

I believe that they once existed but after people stopped
believing in them they went on to the astral and when someone
does see them in this plane they arent all that strong . There are lots
of books out there revolving around this theory . One good book that covers
a lot about them and thier element even how to contact them
( I've never done this however ) . The title is " A Witch's Guide to Faery Folk ".
Hope this helps .

Bless Be

lol Artemis :)

Mermaids are Undines, water elementals. They take on beautiful forms and I'm sure when you were out at sea for weeks or months on end, which is a very spiritual place, you would start to see the creatures of the other world.

There are also aquatic alien species but I don't know if this has any relevance to the mermaids of old legend.

To tell the truth, being in the elements for too long, not to mention the amount of heavy drugs sailors are known to take to sea, being sexually frustrated enough without women on board (old enough superstition to say females are bad luck on a boat) might be bound to cause any drunken/smashed sailor to think it may be a woman from far away. It is supposedly all to do with the way they perceived them. The proper name for the group of dugongs/manitees are "Sirenia". They probably were one of the few sea mammals that would hang around when a boat was nearby.
As with mermaids in legend, members of this group differ from their marine neighbours & have round flat tails which aid their slow graceful movements in the water. This is what probably caused some fisherman to hallucinate or visualise women, not to mention the fearless nature which probably caused them to be one of the more noticed animals of the sea, deliberately playing in apparent enjoyment of human interaction close by.
