christianity as a Kemetic religion
Original post: Samhain
It's easy to see the Egyptian influences in Judaism, and to question whether it was an outgrowth of a certain pharoh's attempt to create monotheism by insisting that his god was the only one that mattered. And christianity is usually seen as an outgrown of Jewish beliefs. However, its dependence of the dead and resurrected god mythos seems to take it out of that category. I realize that there are lots of other dead and resurrected Gods besides Osirus. But the christians also seem to have adopted the Kemetic idea of living one life, dying and facing a judgement, with the wicked being thrown into a lake of fire. The difference is that christians only allow for a body and a soul, instead of multiple parts of the person, so their approach is much simpler. While it's generally assumed that the one life model is based on Jewish ideas, I'm not sure that they were ever big on the idea of a divine judgement of one's life and the wicked being cast into a lake of fire, which is definitely Egyptian. And chirstians also seem to have adopted the idea of the House of Suspended Judgement in the form of Purgatory. So, while lots of people have previously noted the Egyptian influences in christianity, I don't know if anyone has ever considered it as possibly being just a simplistic, stripped down form of Kemetic beliefs, something that might have appealed to simple Egyptian farmers. It is a fact that one of the areas where christianity initially grew most quickly was rural northern Egypt.
I know that christianity was dramatically reshaped by Constantine to create a state religion that would unify the Empire, and that he insisted on the inclusion of a lot of solar symbolism from Mithraism. But it still seems to me that the core beliefs of christianity are a variation of Kemetic ideas. Of course, I don't know enough about Kemetic religion to be certain that this is a valid idea, but I was wondering what other people thought of the idea of considering christianity to be Kemetic Religion for Dummies.

For what it's worth, Purgatory comes into the theological game until about a millennium after Constantine, so that comparison probably doesn't hold.
One concept that doesn't seem to be present in Egyptian religion that Christianity does have is the concept of grace. From what I recall of the Book of Coming Forth by Day, it's largely focused on proper conduct, whereas Christians believe that they need grace from a higher power because they can never measure up. That's a leap that needs to be explained.

Okay, those seem to be two good points against the idea.
I have to admit that while I know a fair bit about christian history, I don't know much about when the various theological concepts were developed. But if the idea of purgatory came later, it's unlikely to have come from Egyptian religion. As for the idea of grace, I thought that was a development of the protestant reformation, but I could be wrong about that.
In any case, I didn't really expect the analogy to stand up that well under scrutiny, since most religions seem to be a combination of older concepts borrowed from various sources, with a different interpretation of them and/or one or two new ideas added. But I think a lot of people do underestimate the Kemetic influences in christianity, and I was hoping that someone who knows a lot about that would comment on it.

The idea of grace, as best I understand it, did exist in Catholicism beforehand, though works were a necessary requirement for salvation on top of it. Still, this isn't exactly my field. For further exploration, you might try the (obviously-biased) Catholic Encyclopedia, starting here:
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06701a.htm
I'd be interested in that as well. It may be a tough call, though, because the best way to figure it out would be to find out what the popular interpretations of first-millennium Egyptian religion were. I doubt there's much non-specialist material on that, if any material exists at all. Maybe a close examination of the Greek magical papyri regarding attitudes toward divinity might help?

In other words, Indo-Europeans whose cultural viewpoint was substantially different from the Egyptian perspective, expecially with respect to ideas about the afterlife, which is what I'm primarily interested in. I'm not sure if the Greeks as a group believed in reincarnation to the same extent that some other Indo-European types such as the Celts did, but certainly many Greek philosophers were familiar with the idea.
It seems to me that what makes christianity and islam powerful instruments of political control is this idea of a very hieirarchical universe where you only get one chance to live a life, after which you face some sort of eternal judgement. And I'm wondering if they got that idea from Egyptian religion. The Egyptian model may not be quite that simple, since they apparently believed in multiple parts of the being that had different experiences after death. So I was thinking that Constantine may have taken the Egyptian model and dumbed it down to a very simplistic notion, emphasizing the judgement and punishment aspect more than the Egyptians would have. Or did the average Egyptian fear punishment in the afterlife to the extent that it was an easy tool for the pharoes to use for social control? So I'm more concerned about how Egyptian peasants would have understood their religion and to what extent it was or wasn't adapted by Constantine and others as an instrument of social control. The Greeks and Hellenized Egyptians in Alexandria, even the ordinary folk, would presumably have had a more sophisticated world view, and from what I've read christianity was much slower to take root there than in the Egyptian countryside.
Compare Christianity with Mithraism and Zoroastrianism
Those influences have been discussed a lot, but don't explain the issue that I was specifically discussing - christianity emphasizing a notion of everybody living one life (as opposed to the more usual idea of reincarnation) and facing some sort of eternal judgement, with sinners being cast into a lake of fire. This makes christianity a very powerful instrument of political control, but the idea didn't come from Mithraism and I don't think that it's Zoroastrian. It seems to have Kemetic origins, at least the lake of fire bit does. But the Egyptians may also have been the source of the idea that you only get one shot at life. So I was wondering whether christianity was using a simplified version of Egyptian ideas about the afterlife that appealed to Constantine for political reasons, or whether the "one life followed by reward and punishment" idea had been an instrument of pharonic control. As I noted, the question is complicated by the fact that the Egyptians recognized many parts of the self, and I'm not sure they all faced the same fate in the afterlife. That's why I was wondering whether christianity should be seen, at least in this one aspect, as being a simplified version of Kemetic religion.

From which source do you derive a lake of fire in Kemetic beliefs? Souls which did not meet the requirements of ma'at were fed to Ammit, the Devourer.
The link that Christianity has with even older beliefs lies within Persia, not Egypt. I honestly think you're barking up a false tree with this one.
However, I would gladly accept indications otherwise

apparently if the ba and ka did not conform at death, it felt like an eternity of yourself being ripped apart... I guess that's kind of like hell...

Maybe the idea is off base. But the lake of fire is mentioned in several sources, including the Papyrus of Ani, which I believe has Ammit crouched beside it. And I have read some material that suggests that after being devoured by Ammit, evildoers are hacked up and thrown in a river or lake of fire to destroy them. I can't remember exactly where I read that. I believe Budge talked about that sort of stuff, so it may not have been correct.
Anyway, what I was really interested in is the way the christian idea of being judged by their god and either rewarded or punished seems a lot like the Egyptian idea of death and judgement. So I was wondering if christianity had more of an Egyptian background than people generally realize. Especially since many of the early bishoprics were in rural parts of northern Egypt. But if you think that the influences were all Persian, I'll have to take your word for it. Certainly there were a lot of Persian influences, with the seven sacraments and the consecrated host in the monstrance and all that sort of stuff.

Now that definitely is off-topic for this forum. Personally, I'd also consider it spamming, and spamming of dubious goods in fact. Maybe some moderator should shove this thread into the General Theology Forum. But I still feel that none of the Kemetic experts have tried to address my question.

notice how egypt is occupied by muslims.....rhp always tryin to destroy egypt since the beginning of there crazy religion....
other than they stealing from egypt there no connections.....look at sumer to find the origins of rhp symbols etc....if u study sumer u'll understand the root of all the religions and who made what..

Well I find it interesting to say that the Roman Catholics lets say are 'stealing' someones religion, when all religions follow the same exact basic structure. Oh well, to each his own.

Well I guess it depends what you consider to be the true core of all religions. The true core of all religions are very free, open, and full of grace and peace- not to mention find the roots of magick. Religion as it has become today, full of extremism and hatred: that is our enemy.

i have some friends that r rgyptain gods but personally i am againest religion in any form....even egyptain.....
i call them as i see them and by the results ...not what they want me to believe.....
i dont worship my friends becuase worship is for slaves....
but i highly suggest studying sumer as ur god and his and egyptain etcc all root from there...u'll start to reconize who's symbol is whos.....even morals r flawed as i can be ur savoir and destroyer at the same time ....its all persective...
for magic study though the rhp is all againest it labeling it evil...even in the dark ages the pope said reading was evil....ive found egypt to help the most in magic study but i also use kundilini, kuji kiri, etc...see where im going ....by not being a follower im able to use all to my advantage and learning....by sticking to a religion its like a cage.......like a style in martail arts.....what do u do when he grabs u and u only know boxing..

christianity as a Kemetic religion

hi
sorry i took so long to find this post, i hope to spend some time answering this question. right as far as i know current research trying to link judaism (sorry if i spell it wrong) with the monotheistic reign of Akhenaten has been rejected. but there are some points that are indeed similar. like you said judgement is very similar, im sure you are right about Ammit next to a lake but im not sure if that specific one is the lake of fire though i have heard of such a lake somewhere i wish i could find where lol. note also the christian cross and the dramatic resemble to tha ankh, thats one of my own points. also some of the oldest christian churches are in and around egypt, one in particular has been found in the Sinai desert right next door. what would be a good project would be to relate coptic christians and see if they are the oldest known faction perhaps. it may take some time i certainly intend to investigate personally, on a hunch i would say there is a link but further evidence is required, i hope i have been of some help.
