Okay. Now hyle is like the Hindu concept of karma, but it is distinctly different. What it is...

The physical world is a prison. Every action done by the physical being causes a web of evil to form, and when that web of evil closes in, the physical form, and depending on what Gnostic commentator you read, the spiritual spark of life, is destroyed. That is the simplistic explanation of hyle.

Now, there is a way out, and that is pneuma, or spirit. And every action of pneuma frees the physical form from this demonic physical being represented by the body and the fallen world. It is disputed whether or not this action of pneuma can be initiated by the person, or whether it is initiated by the emanations of the Father with the person being only able to accept hs fate.

Hyle in Greek means "fate," but it is different than the traditional Greek concept of fate in that instead of being tied to the Gods, it is tied to the physical form of the body and the world.
